Making huge portions of chili, other soups, roasts that can be made in to many meals during the week is a very good idea for a person living on a budget. Also find a budget grocery in your area like an Aldi's 80$ can pretty much get you 2 weeks worth of food if you think what you need in terms of what you want to have in the house. My grocery budget is 200 for 3 weeks, If I have to I can make it last a month and I have by shopping at a budget grocery. Also clip coupons if you dont have a budget grocery in your area and keep it to things you know you will use, not think you will then never do.

Also makeing a list of what you need is a good idea and shop at several stores if those items are on sale.

Make a big pot of chili, using dry beans cooked from scratch. Rice and beans from scratch is also inexpensive.

Of course, there's always ramen.

You can call a community cupboard or pantry. That's why they are there, and want to help!!!

If you can afford a loaf of bread, a dozen eggs, and margarine, you can make almost anything. add cheese and make grilled cheese. Add syrup and make french toast. add nothing and have plain egg sandwhiches.

Also, try this! It's my family poverty dish.

Tamali Pie- This recipe is fast, easy, and cheap! The cool thing, is you can make as much or as little as you like. You can use as much cheese as you want, you can have a lot of chili and a little cornbread or a lot of cornbread and a little chili. If you like, you can add corn, onions, and tomatoes to the chili or corn to the cornbread batter. If you like sweet cornbread, add a teaspoon of sugar to the batter.

Ingredients:
2 packages of cornbread mix
cheese (i like velveta, but american or cheddar or even cream cheese is good too)
2 cans of your favorite chili

1. Open cans of chili and poor into a baking dish.
2. Top with cheese.
3. In a separate bowl, mix cornbread batter according to instructions on package. When mixed, pour on top of cheese.
4. Bake at 350 until chili begins to bubble and the top of cornbread is golden about 30 min. give or take.

Top with sour cream and hot sauce or serve with a tossed salad and ranch dressing. Mmmmm

eat soup

If you can spend about 3-5 dollars per meal, you can always try healthy choice frozen meals. I eat those for lunch. It's WAY cheaper than actually buying my lunch (which can sometime cost over $10.00). They're not bad :)

I'm sure you've heard this before, but Raman noodles are cheap and filling. Peanut butter is good, just because it has a lot of protein, with bread or crackers. If you are near a bread store, day old bread is about 1/2 price. Go to a breakfast restaurant, get seated, and read the menu. Tell the waitress you need more time, then put the jelly and peanut butter packs in your purse. Go to the bathroom, then leave.. When you get back on your feet, you can make a donation to a charity in their name, or just send them a money order if you feel the need.

Most of the know world lives very well on the above. Just try and balance it out with fresh veg and fruit when you can afford it.

Watch stores for dollar sales, pasta is usually cheap. Also look for a store called Aldi. We've got them here & since it opened, I've been saving at least $50 a week on my grocery bill. Peanut butter & jelly is cheap & so is bread. Try to stay away fromTV dinners & premade stuff....its usually more expensive. Good luck!

I've been there, done that (and currently am going through it again lol) We buy a lot of rice and pasta mixes. They are cheap, and you can eat them for a quick lunch or serve them with a meat or a few sides for a complete meal. They aren't great for you, but they are cheap and filling. You can buy name brand (Rice-a-Roni) for a little over a buck, or spend about 60 cents for store brand mixes. We also have spaghetti with canned sauce and a box of noodles a lot. It's a whole meal for about $3. Ramen are always there too, but they are awful for you. Bean burritos are cheap enough to make. Just get a package of tortillas, a can of beans, and some shredded cheese and salsa if you like. Hope this helps!

Try making your own shrimp paste (sambal) or purchase it. You can get one bottle of DeliChef Crispy Shrimp In Chilli Oil from the nearest Cosway.

Next, spread the Shrimp paste onto the bread. You might like it if you love spicy and crunchy foods.

Bento made out of overnight leftovers might be useful too.

get some quaker rolled oats and make porridge every morning (fibre-fills you up and the bag of oats will last a long time(for many breakfasts and is cheap) you can add brown sugar or raisins if you want
for lunches, when you go grocery shopping buy a few loaves of bread and put in the freezer to keep*

make peanut butter/ jam
egg salad sandwiches
tuna sandwiches (no name brand is 79Cents a can)
if you have left overs from dinner bring that for lunch
box of 4 chicken noodle soups get some crackers

you need to sit down and start making a list of the food you need weekly and how much you have to spend. You still need to eat healthy or you'll get sick.
If you're struggling all the time, sit down and make yourself a budget....ask family /friends for help, or your local community..and let them know you're in a bind right now and need some assistance(they'll help with food)..try your local church~

try and make your meals stretch~
with 1 lb. ground beef, you can fry up , drain well, add some chopped onion, salt/pepper ...add can of pasta sauce, stir well, simmer with lid, stirring occasionally, in the meantime.....boil some macaronni noodle shells, or rigatoni shells, drain when pasta is ready, put back into pot..add meat sauce and stir to cover macaronni * (you'll have alot enough for a few meals)

Rice & Noodles are usually cheap & can be flavoured with almost anything.

But also check out the fruit & veg department - there is usually something on special (i.e. pumpkin is often under a buck over here in NZ).

And on the meat side, there's usally mince or franks, & sometimes sausages.

Can't just live on rice & noodles for long periods - You gotta try for some balance all you'll end up with scurvy or low on energy.

Check out plain pack food at your local supermarket too (e.g. we sometimes have a can of spagetti, soup, or baked beans going in plain pack for 50cents - there's a meal there) Not to mention plain pack rice & noodles for more savings.

Plus stop around to friends & relitives at dinner time on occasion (not all the time though or they'll stop inviting you to join them) :o)

Buy a bag of regular potatoes, some eggs, rice, chicken, and mac and cheese. You can make a million things out of potatoes, eat eggs for every meal, and chicken and rice will give you a lot of meals of too.
