How long does it take an egg to get to the supermarket after it is layed?!
Answers: I spent years on a egg farm. Eggs are best the fresher they are so being made available to the consumer as fast as possible is preferred. However, cold storage eggs, four or six weeks old or much longer, are often what you get when the price of eggs are highest. Christmas, or the entire Holiday Season, is usually the time of the year when eggs are the most expensive because people are traditionally going to do a lot of baking at this time and the demand for eggs is high. Good restaurants look for egg suppliers that can deliver yesterdays eggs every morning. Compare the fried eggs that are served to you in a restaurant, with their full high rising, golden yolks, with those that you fry for your family for breakfast at home. At home you may notice that the yolk is flatter and spreads wider and also maybe not as deep golden in color. Yolk color is also desirably and that is associated with the feed that is provided to the hen. If hens have green grass or even alfalfa hay provided, the yolk color will be deep yellow or golden and that makes a fried egg on you plate ( sunny-side-up ) a much more appealing breakfast. Look for a sign in the country " Fresh Yard Eggs". Buy some and go straight home and fry them and then notice the quality of the eggs. To put a smile on the waitresses face when she ask " How do you want your eggs ? " , tell her " Runny-side-up"
two weeks
When the egg is layed it has to be processed through a procedure to make sure it does not have air bubbles, blood spots, etc. That should be immediately if it is coming from a processed chicken farm as they have a mass production process. Then the egg is put into a cooler process and that too should be immediate. Then it is crated and shipped out. You would have to check with your local agricultural department to find out the exact length of time it would take. All eggs are dated. Check the cartons you buy in your local store.
