Doesn't it seem like bananas ripen suddenly after you pull off and eat the first one in a bunch? Or am i haluc!

Question: or am i halucinating?

I had a bunch of 7 or 8 bananas which were completely green and hard as a rock. I pulled one off and ate it even though it tasted like bamboo, and suddenly the remaining bananas ripened over night !!
Not that i'm complaining, but it seems like they always do that, and i would like to know why.
thanks.

What the first answerer says is good, there are some other things you can do to help you with this matter.
Keep the bananas in a hanging position, you can use a banana hanger or just keep them upright by putting them beside the kitchen wall.
Do not rip the banana of the bunch, instead use a sharp knife and cut it as close as to banana, this way the damage to the ... is minimum, therefore less harmful gases are produced.
Buy smaller bunch, so you'll always have fresh yellow banana to enjoy.
You can cover the tip of the bunch with clear plastic food wrap, I am not sure how it helps, but it does, I tried it. (I noticed the organic bananas in supermarkets are like this.)

This information is good to know too ...

... This simple technology involves packing the fruit in a polyethylene bag and including an ethylene absorbent, potassium permanganate, on an inert carrier. The bag is then sealed with a band or string. This low cost treatment more than doubles the life at a range of temperatures and can give a life of up to 3-4 weeks without the need of refrigeration. The method is suitable for bunches, hands and even fingers. ...

You're not hallucinating since they are all picked at the same time and grouped together, they will ripen at about the same time.

What you can do is buy smaller clusters of bananas at different stages of ripeness (A couple ripe. Another couple greenish-yellow and the last couple green). That way the bananas will ripen at different times instead of all at once.

no your not halucinating it happens to me all the time i have no idea why but i hope someone on here will answer because i would like to know also.

I know what you mean, happens to me too! Can't think of a good explaination though.

I wonder if you did as the first answerer says and buy a green bunch, and a ripe bunch and pull one banana off of each and see if this speeds up the ripening for both bunches

Yes, they do. Try to keep them in a brown PAPER bag...no plastic!

try keeping them in a place with warmer temp, it will ripen faster.

Dave is right about buying a few at varying stages of ripeness. Just keep them separate and not enclosed. The riper the banana, the more ethylene gas they produce. That ripens all the nearby bananas faster. Once ripe, you can refrigerate... they turn ugly black on the outside, but are still fine inside.

I am not certain, but I believe that damaging the hand of bananas might cause them to produce the ethylene faster and in greater quantities.

I've always thought the same thing! I have no idea why, maybe it's something to do with the newly opened area at the top of the bunch, and the oxygen in the air......I really don't have a clue!
