After watching the Masterchef series on BBC2?!

Question: .....does anyone else think that there is an appalling waste of food that goes on in restaurantl kitchens? Perfectly good food is thrown in the bin simply because it "doesn't look right" or is 1 degree below servable temperature. Is there anything one can do to take a stand against this senseless waste?

You are so right. I am planning on writing to the government about such appaling wasting of perfectly good grub. When we have to pay congestion charge for gas guzzlers and these people throwing away decent food, I wonder, what is this country coming to. I sometimes feel ashamed to be called British. I bet you that in somewhere like Karachi or Bombay, this kind of wastage would never occur. Also, we the licence fee payer, are not even allowed to get some of that food. I pay my licence, so I am entitled to some of that food.

you don't even know half of the truth...
there is so much food waste in the restaurant world it would make ANYONE cry...
most people who work in the industry would like to see the scraps, waste, mistakes etc...go to hungry people, employees, or return it to the earth in the form of compost or something, anything except the landfill sites. But food safety regulations prohibit many actions, and corporate restaurants would rather scrap the food than give it to employees because it would send a message that their food could be taken for free...

Walk past most diners / cafes / restaurants etc etc and look at food left on tables , one time i went to the movies gold class and after the movie this couple had left 2 pieces of cake , half a pizza , some popcorn , and one plate half full of food .
Then at home you see an add for starving people.

indeed it is, its disgusting........
often i don't see the point of masterchef..........I prefer Ready Steady Cook (if that still comes on anymore - I don't know). The point I am trying to make is that contestants fail because for example, their sauce or gravy is too thin or thick, or their mash is like glue or is lumpy, or the "orange" flavour takes up all flavours of the dessert. The thing is that, everyone has their own taste, some like gravy thick, or their mash lumpy or a specific flavour to take over........so how can they fail on that? Once I saw Gordon Ramsay making a dish for Prince Charles and his Mrs. Prince Charles asked Gordon Ramsay to "overcook" his steak.......I'm sure that the two who judge it, I don't know their names, bald guy with specs and the other guy with dark hair and no specs would have failed Gordon Ramsay for the "overcooked" steak......wouldn't you agree?
Ready Steady Cook: the food is judge by the audience and when it is tasted it is at their discretion and the way it is cooked.

The older I get - the more I wonder!

Hi Car :) There is something you can do. Of course there is. It starts with people like you. You research. You study food waste. You find outlets for this waste. Set up a company similar to recycling equipment, bottles etc and promote the idea at local and National Government level. If you are passionate about it then do it!!! and lead others by the hand. You could be an amazing voice not only in the U.K. but far beyond. A law could be introduced all over Europe for food recycling and if done well - many many benefits can emerge. In addition you could become the richest woman in the U.K. Do it!! :) xx
