Is sushi pretentious?!
Personally I think sushi is a ridiculous trend that people pretend to enjoy and I'm coming from the angle of someone who knows what real sushi is. In a way, sushi is an accident. It was created in the old days of preserving foods before refridgeraters were invented. They buried the fish in the ground and covered it with rice and kelp to keep it from going bad. Sometimes the fish would go bad and ferment which gave the surrounding rice a vinegar flavor. People liked the way the rice tasted. What you know as sushi is fake
Answers: Someone tell me the big deal with sushi. I've had it several times, it's plain white rice with a plain fish and/or plain vegetables. Plain rice and plain fish tastes PLAIN. The only flavor you get is from dipping in soy sauce or from the wasabi so bascially you're eat rice with soy sauce which is no different than fried rice from chinese takeout. I want to watch a sushi fanatic eat an entire bowl of plain unflavored rice and go 'Yum that was good' at the end.

Absolutely
Its for snobs and rich people in the US and its so gross and nasty
also- i am referring to the Americanized version of the product not where it originated from.
no its raw fish.
if you dont enjoy it then done eat it. But dont speak against others who truly enjoy the experience of true sushi.
I dont like "trendy" sushi. Those rolls are ridiculous i'll grant you that, but dont knock good true sushi. If it's not to your liking, then dont eat it, no one is forcing you to.
Not a sushi fan, myself.
Whether what I eat is fake sushi or not, I dont doubt that it is, But not all of it is plain. The stuff I like called the New York New York roll is very tasteful, with cream cheese and all kindsa stuff on there.
I dont east sushi to "be cool" or "fit in"
I will get it to take it home and eat by myself. I love the wasabi and soy blend. I love wasabi on plenty of things, but some of the sushi rolls do have flavor by themselves.
You`re a moron.
You say you`ve had sushi several times! How does several make an expert?
Try it at Tsukiji market a few dozen times.
According to your theory we shouldn`t eat anything which has changed from it`s original. Let`s all cook Mrs Beeton`s originals, after all all new food creations must be fake!
What you are talking about is Oshizushi, a foul smelling preserved fish which was very local, like haggis and is eaten by very few people in Japan, and is also very old, like 500 years old. And Japanese people would not call this sushi now.
The sushi we all eat now is called Edomaezushi and started around the time the westeners came to Japan in the Meiji era.
People in Tokyo(Edo) around the arakawa river and Tokyo bay started to put local fish on rice and expanded it to Ocean fish. Many foods at that time changed to suit the western palate.
100% of Japanese today recognise Edomaezushi as proper sushi which if fresh if very tasty.
When you put smoke salmon on bread, do you only taste the bread?
Maybe you`re a smoker and your taste buds are shot?
I can tell you though, I took my friend to Tsukiji a few years ago, he swore he loved sushi. When he ate there he suddenly didn`t like it because it was so fresh and he could taste everything. Mmmmm lovely.
PS you should never dip the rice side of your sushi in the soy, turn it over and dip a corner of the fish side, that way you don`t overpower the rice with soy.
Also, sushi accounts for only about 5% of a Japanese person`s meal.
yes do you think anyone but housewives would buy/eat this crap if it came from the chip shop?
"What you know as sushi is fake" - How the ----- would you know this about me?
You aught to go have a pizza without the toppings.
A salad with just lettuce.
Pancakes without butter and/or syrup.
A hamburger with no ketchup, mustard, or any other condiments, or better yet without the meat.
How about a bread sandwich.
Got a great idea for you Mr Food God King - Go to your kitchen and throw away all condiments of every sort. No more oils, butter, cheese, flavorings or seasonings of any sort. I mean, that's whee all you other food gets it's flavoring, DUH! Sounds like you have no idea what Sushi is. I think that you should only be allowed to eat raw flour for now on. Either that or go eat a bucket of every condiment, ingredient, seasoning, meat fruit, vegetable, etc. and mix it all together and that will be you daily meal.
You know nothing of what you are talking about.
I know what you mean. I'm not really a fan. I think these stupid sushi bars are pretentious. Sushi itself doesn't do it for me as a meal.
However, It is good drinking food!
I like mine with beer :)
Wasabi and soy and lemon mixed together so its a lovely light brown colour dip in. The burn followed by a nice swig of beer... Oh yes!
No, it's not pretentious. It's just Japanese.
You know how when you walk through a western grocery store and they hand out food samples? Well, in grocery stores in Japan, they hand out samples of raw fish. True. Have seen it with my very own eyes. Lived there for several years.
We may have made it pretentious here in the West, but to them, it's just food.
