Here is an article about crushed bugs used in candies...as "carmine", "shellac" and look for them disguised as "resinous glaze" or "confectioners glaze"...(also these glazes and shellacs are used in pills)...carmine is a red food coloring used in cosmetics and sometimes red or pink fruit juices, etc.

~ that is an old urban legend,,,,,,they also used to say that there were spider eggs in bubble gum to help with the texture and to blow bigger bubbles,,,,,,,that to is an urban legend....Chemicals are used to make the dyes for the coloring of gum.....

cochineal beetles also used in red colouring for cooking..it is called cochineal...that was why the red colouring was dropped from childrens sweets..
