Does anyone else feel that a "serving size" is unrealistic?!

Question: I mean things like a 99 cent bag of chips that say they are three servings.....why not just give the nutritional info for the entire bag, because no one gets three servings out of those.....

And this stuff about a "serving" of fruit (according to the USDAs suggestion of 9-11 servings of fruits and vegetables) being half an orange...what does anyone do with the other half.....

Anyone else feel this "serving size" stuff is confusing, or misleading, or unrealistic?

Just wondering

The government has all kinds of regulations on food and this drives why manufacturers have such ridiculous serving sizes.

Yeah!! I just bought mints today, and it said 1 serving is one mint. That is really unrealistic!! Mints are like sugar, which we only are suppose to eat 2 or less servings everyday and eating 2 mints isn't really a daily serving of mints for me!!
So unrealistic!!!

a serving size seams realistic if your feeding a 1-2 yearold.lol

Yes it is misleading and unrealistic. Not to mention confusing. But i have a feeling companies do it to make their product not seem as fattening. For example, you look at chips and think, 'oh it only has 300 calories, i will eat those!' but really there are 4 "servings" in it and you are eating four times the fat you thought you were eating. It is so consumers think that things are better for them then they really are. And yes, they should definilty just say one peice of fruit is a serving, or one bag of chips is one serving etc etc. It would save a lot of hassle!!!!!

They are only nutritional guidelines-the amount of any given food you eat is up to you. The amounts of calories, fats and nutrients in a given food are facts-they aren't making those numbers up, it's just what's in that amount of that food.
And, yes, some of us DO actually make three servings out of that bag of chips, or put the other half of the fruit in a baggie for later. Or you could just count it as two of your daily recommended servings.
