Fruit

It is a fruit.

A vegetable is technically defined as a part of a plant that is neither a fruit or seed. A fruit is defined as the plant organ which develops from the plant's ovary and surrounds the plant's seeds.

Other fruits commonly mistaken for vegetables: tomatoes (they're berries). In common usage, many things that are technically fruits are still called vegetables in everyday life (ex: cucumbers, green beans, corn kernals, eggplants, etc). This is more due to taste than a true scientific distinction.

However, coconuts are definitely a fruit, as it contains the coconut embryo inside one of the 'eyes' (fitting the technical definition of fruit), and also because it is sweet and used like other fruits (the loose everyday meaning of fruit).

So it's a fruit by both definitions.

it is a fruit.

similarities of fruit and coconut....
*they have watery thingies inside them
*they have cores.....

whatever happens, it is a fruit. i simply tell you that coconut is a fruit. okie????

????
Niether!
It is a nut.

coconut is very use ful to us. it is generally known and classified as fruit

its a fruit

for me it's neither of the two between the fruit and vegetable, but i consider it as a "nut" since the root word comes "coco" + nut, thus coconut. check your dictionary maybe it has there. mine is Oxford and the Thesaurus.

fruit....it's sweet....but it has vegtable qualities like oil...hey even milk so maybe its animal??

Is a Coconut a fruit, vegetable or a nut?

Not an easy question, because some of these words have a technical meaning as well as the meaning your granny would expect.

To a botanist, a fruit is "the product of a fertilised ovary".

My dictionary tells me that a vegetable is just a plant which is eaten (either whole or in part) by humans.

To a botanist, a nut is a "dry, indehiscent, single-seeded fruit with a hard woody wall".

Now, when I read the information in another record I find that the whole coconut including the outer coir fiber coating is a "fruit". The coir fiber (which is removed where the coconuts grow before being shipped to our shops) is the ovary wall.

I wouldn't call it a vegetable, but it does fit the dictionary definition.

I guess that the object you buy in the shops (or win at a fairground) is not quite a typical "nut", because the "wall" is the original coir fiber, but I don't think many people would dare to contradict you if you called it a nut. Technically, you could call the coconut (as sold in shops) a "seed" - but you will see that even the experts in are not sure where the "testa" or seed coat is!

A coconut is a seed. If it is not harvested from the tree, it will drop to the ground and, if left undisturbed, will begin to sprout.
