How do you tell when a Watermelon is ripe?!

Question: I've heard it has nothing to do w/the color.
And also if you tap your knuckle on it and it's hollow it means ripe or unripe? Can't remember...

I'm the only one in my family allowed to pick watermelons cuz I always get them the ripest.

Thunk on the watermelon...if it sounds hollow, it is ripe. Also, push gently on the stem end (the part that looks like a bellybutton)..if it gives a little bit, it is ripe. And smell it at the stem end...if it smells like watermelon, it is great.

Those tips, along with shaking (to hear seeds rolling around), are also the way you can tell if honeydew and cantalope are ripe, too.

I've always thumped a melon and if it sounded hollow I bought it, and they were good!

You gotta thump dat **** - if you hear an echo/return, it's ripe for da reaping.

I flick them...and listen for that nice "ring" sound.

A "low" drab sound means not ripe.

Then I promptly go home and gobble it up.

:D

yes you are right. tap it and if you can hear a slight echo it is ripe and if it's really stiff with no sound when you tap then it's still not ready.

It is also good to see a lot of bee stings in it. It looks like beige little holes in it.

U thump it. Watermelons are mostly water. when they are ripe they sound hollow because of the water content. So it you don't have that hollow sound , it will be still meaty, because it hasn't enough water content.

cut it and eat it..
