No more plastic bags:Will supermarkets like the idea of everybody carrying lots of bags around the store?!
For car shoppers there are collapsible boxes and reuseable bags.
If you carry a load of bags on your arm and they're sticking out in all directions other shoppers may complain though.
Answers: I've never had any objections to my canvas bags, I just make sure they are closed while shopping and at one end of the trolley, then open them up at the checkout. Been doing it for years.

Why not? I've been toting canvas bags to the grocery store for over 15 years and it's never been an issue.
I can't see what difference that would make - most people will have a trolley and the bags won't be filled with anythng until check out - otherwise, maybe there will be lockers for existing bags full of other purchases from elsewhere?
Its what people did in times before plastic carrier bags.

i do it anyway, or if ive forgotten to bring any i take things home without a bag - ive had some funny looks from security when i walk out of the shop carrying a pile of groceries in my arms! but its all fun.
That's what we used to do. Let's face it you'll still use trolleys and put it into your own bags at the checkout. I scan my own shopping and it goes straight into re-usable bags provided by the supermarket. It's much easier than messing around with loads of plastic bags, both in the supermarket and to & from the car.
Probably not but they will find another way of telling us what to do instead. I'm sick of them dictating to me all the time! I wish I didn't have to eat so I didn't have to go to places like that!lol
I just carry a holdall with a cool bag in it, have done for years , it's just so much easier. :)
Why would they care if people bring bags? People toss them in their carts and then shop and then pull the bags out to be filled when they're done, so it should be no big deal to the store. I've been bringing the same grocery store bags back to be refilled at our grocery store for quite a while. In fact, our store will credit you 5 cents per bag you bring, plus it keeps me from having mounds of plastic and piles of paper bags in my cupboard. I'd really rather have the canvas ones but since I already have huge amounts of plastic and paper that I've saved, I just keep reusing those.

One of the things I was taught to look for in order to spot a potential shoplifter was if they were carrying a "wrong" bag, ie. a Sainsbury's one if there wasn't a Sainsbury's nearby.
Well I do anyway so thats 5/ 6 carrier bags saving the planet 3 times a week.
I think the store would think about people shoplifting and putting stuff in their bags before they get to the checkout.!!
My local Makro does not any bags into it's store, or out. You have to take the trolley to your car.
i know what you mean even if you go shopping with a big handbag in your hand your being watched by store detectives
In Germany it's common for people to bring their own bags to the store, because otherwise you'll be charged per plastic bag, you want your groceries etc. packed in, from the store.
It's not a big deal there, so I don't see why it would be a big deal here in the US to bring your own bags.
It would save the stores a LOT of money if all customers brought their own bags here, not to speak of the savings to our planet. I find that since people in the US don't get charged for the plastic bags, it seems no big deal to just chuck the bags, where in comparison people in Germany seem to save their bags to try to re-use them at least once.
When I end up with some plastic bags, I re-use them as trash bags - haven't bought small trash bags in years.
In any other country in the world carrying your bags with you is common practice, the only place this would never become the norm is in U.S. supermarkets; because if you bring anything into the store with you it is most likely a bomb or a gun. It couldn't possibly be someone who just cares about saving the environment.
I don't think it will make the slightest difference, people will just buy them instead. After all it wasn't so long ago that you had to pay for them anyway, and I had just as many stuffed in a drawer.
I think that they need to bring back trolley bags,the ones that used to fit in the supermarket trolley. They could be made out of recycled old clothes. That way you could do your shop without single bags at all.
Cloth bags are nice. Some supermarkets sell them. They are washable and more environmentally friendly than reusing plastic bags.
