Homemade Bread VS. Store Bought?!

Question: I know that homemade bread is better tasting, fresher, and probably better for you, but is it cost efficient? It doesn't really matter to me, since I will still be making my own bread, but is homemade bread THAT much more expensive than buying it from the store, or is it, in fact, cheaper?

Homemade bread is more expensive, actually by at least 50%. I don't know where these people get their numbers or opinions from. They've obviously never been in a commercial bakery.

Just use some logic. Don't you think a commercial bakery which bakes a thousand loaves an hour could do it more effecienty that a person baking one or two at a time at home. To say nothing of the the fact that the commercial bakery can purchase raw materials for about 1/10 the cost of the same material in a small quantity from the gocery store.

So lets' get real. I bake sourdough bread about once a week. I agree homemade bread tastes better and provides more variety, but never cheaper!! Anyone who thinks that is just trying to make themselves feel good.

Yes it is. A loaf of homemade bread is $1-$3 cheaper per loaf depending on what kind it is. I've been making my own bread for ages and I calculated it out a while ago :) Happy bread making!

I'm sure it's cheaper if you don't factor in time-- it's all fairly cheap basic baking stuff. When you go to the store, bread is $3 or $4 a loaf. You could buy the materials to make 5 loaves with $5.

It is generally cheaper. How much cheaper depends on what kind of bread you buy or make.

And in general I find home made bread to be much tastier. However I've always felt that bought bread makes better grilled cheese sandwiches. I think it just caramelizes easier. So maybe a sweeter home made bread would work too.

Most definately home made is more cost efficiant, and worlds better for you. You control what goes in the bread, that alone is worth its weight in gold to me. But, you can indeed make more bread for $5.00 then in comparision to buying one loaf of over processed, chemically treated disgusting manufactured bread.
