Rotten Stilton Cheese?!

Question: I got some stilton at a grocery store. I have never tried it but heard it was very good. The cheese I got is called blue veined, though the veins look almost black. It smells like sweaty, moldy sports gear! It tasted like the nastiest mold/swamp muck, with a horrid everlasting after after taste. I could taste no cheese, only mold. I just tried some Parmigano Reggiano = Real Good, tried some 22 month Gouda = Awesome, then stilton......Is this rotten or what???

Black veins are caused by the mould that stilton actually needs dying off - so you shouldnt eat it. Good stilton should be an off-white colour with dark green or blue veins, not black. Stilton is very strong though - very swtrong and is an acquired taste so you might not even like it when you get a good one, but personally I love it!

Doesn't sound right at all! The veining should be a real blueish green colour, and the cheese a creamy white, with a slightly salty afterbite. The outside of the cheese should have a 'crust' and holes that you can see where the wires were pulled through to make the veining. Sounds as if you got some WELL passed it's sell-by date!

it's the type of mold used in there.
