Why does bread not mold on it's side?!

Question: When you get a loaf of bread, it starts to mold after some time. But when you lay the loaf on it's side, it doesn't mold for a LONG time. Why is that??

My guess is that the mold starts where there is moisture from steam in the bread as it cooled. Steam rises so it's more moist on the top of the bread. If you lay it on its side, the water can dry out and the bread won't mold as fast.

flip it on it's side and mabye it will mold faster on the side.
