Farmer's market?!

Question: Do they sell all organic food, or some organic food? Do they sell:

Organic chicken
Organic beef
Organic macaroni and cheese
Organic milk
Organic yogurt
Organic bread
Organic bananas
Organic mangos
Organic cereal
Organic corn
Organic spaghetti
Organic chicken broth

Sorry, I just need to know before I start spend a whopping $150 at Safeway every month.

No not all food sold at the farmers market is organic. And at some farmers markets it is not local either, you have to do some detective work and talk to the farmers.

The certified organic farms will by law have their organic certification papers displayed or at least on hand so if a farm is claiming organic ask to see their papers. that said there are thousands of small farms like mine that used to be certified organic but dropped out voluntarily when the USDA took over in the fall of 2002. We are still growing organically but cannot use the term organic to market our food so use terms such as sustainable, Eco-Farm, etc.. Again talk to the farmer about how they grow food, we love to talk about how we grow our food and manage our farms.

than there are th folks who claim organic in order to charge more but are not at all organic. With meat the key is to ask where they get their grain and if there are GMO's (genetically modifed organisms) used in their grain or if they get it from the local mill. If the grain is not certified organic (and if it comes from anyplace other than a certified organic farm it is NOT organic as there are amazingly few certified organic feed mills in the US. I don't know of any in Ohio and I have several friends who grow cert organic grain and they all wholesale to a mill in Canada) than it has GMO's and likely antibiotics and synthetic vitamins.

Now at a farmers market that sells all local products (this is the market you want) you will not find processed goods such as macaroni and cheese in a box or spaghetti but yoy may find noodles and goats cheese. You generally will not fiond milk at market as there are so many regulations for selling milk and it is just easier and more profitable for dairy people to sell the milk whole sale. You can find Mangoes if your market is in the tropics, same with bananas-if a farmer is selling these sorts of things at market he/she is reselling food and should not be trusted to have anything locally produced.

You can almost always find organic granola but not other kinds of cereals unless the market is huge and has vendors with food processing facilities.

Remember a farmers market is not a grocery store so do not expect to find a lot of processed foods. most the food will be whole and in the raw and very very fresh.

Why not go along to the market to find out before going into Safeway?

Mostly organic. This is what makes these outlets so unique. When you shop at a farmer's market you at least have a sense of quality. I mean, this is the guy/gal that produced it, thats standing behind it selling it to you.

Good luck

First you have to figure out when your local Farmer's Market opens. You are going to have to go and peruse the place and get a feel for it, bigger markets sell more things, but sometimes smaller ones have more obscure stuff. I went to one in Phoenix that sold organic, veggie spaghetti and it was tiny, but the huge one in Boise doesn't have that. I think there are some very tight temperature regulations for dairy products so you more than likely won't find dairy products at your local farmer's market unless it is cheese. As for the produce, you are going to find things that people can grow commonly in their gardens based on what agricultural zone you live in. Bananas and mangoes won't be likely unless you live in Costa Rica or somewhere and if you live in Idaho you will see lots of potatoes. :) Good luck and if you can avoid it, don't spend that much at Safeway, find a Co-Op to supplement what you are able to purchase at the Farmer's Market. Eat local!

Find out when your market is on, go to the market and see what is there. Some times the produce varies.

If they don't have all the organic foods you want you could buy some at the market and have a look round other stores appart from safeways because some things might be cheaper.
Hope that helps
:)

The only item on the list that they sell at the one near me is the organic corn.
