Fill a glass with water drop a egg in it, if it drops straight to the bottom it is as fresh as, if it kinda bounces and hangs mid water it is OK if it floats it is off! this is caused by the gases produced inside the egg.

Drop into cup of water. If it sinks then it's ok. if it's halfway then it's going off. If it floats straight away then its definitely off.
