To keep any food from making a mess in it.

So the sauce won't splatter all over the inside of the microwave. Then I have the tedious task of cleaning the microwave.

To prevent splattering of food on the walls and ceiling of the microwave.

I only do if it contains tomato products, b/c those pop and splatter in the m/w.

For most things, I use plastic wrap though, to hold in heat and keep rice/pasta from drying out.

I'm not sure but i guess it's to absorb some of the grease
