Why do food places throw away good food when they close?!

Question: when at place like walmart's Deli closes, they throw away the food even if its fresh and good to eat. they're NOT allowed to eat it, or give it away - your only 2 options are throw it away or lose your job and they find someone else who will..

i'm seeing this for the first time, so obviously i think its kinda cruel. is there some kind of reason that justifies it?

It's for liability.
If they give them out to other people - and the food turns bad or the person receiving the food gets sick - they can get sued (it's the American culture!)
It would be great if the food can be given out to the needy but, I don't think Walmart, etc would want to risk getting sued out of act of charity.

It's unsanitary!

well we cant do anything about it .....yes the supermarkets cant keep guud fod today tommorow cuz they get spoiled...but they also don give any to the people beause of an answer they themselves dont no...it just shows how cruel pplz in the world are

What he's saying is that "even if the food is fresh and good to eat" they still have to throw it away. Which to me makes no sense at all. Ok, if they don't want to give it away, then why not give it to the employees instead of wasting it? The key point is that the food is still "good." It's not unsanitary.

I don't know. I work in a senior home. We have a kitchen in there and they throw out so much good food. Sometimes we take it home because it seems like a sin to be that wasteful. They could at least give it to groups helping the homeless. We could probably feed the whole world if people weren't so wasteful!

It's the same policy at the restaurant my dad works at. He says it's just the code of conduct with the Health Dept. If they ever get caught or reported, the local health dept can write them up or even close them down. Even if it's still "fresh," but if given to even employees, anybody can say the food made them sick and start a lawsuit. It's just sad, sad, sad----when there are so many people starving in 3rd world countries.

I have always wondered the same thing! I say we should be able to bring the food home and put it to good use!! It's such a waste.

Restaurants used to give it to shelters or homeless people but two things started happening...first the recipients were getting picky asking for the establishments were actually getting sued sometimes if people got food poisoning. In the sue happy world we live in today it just ended up to big of a liability. Sad because so many people could benefit from it. Such a waste.

well if they gave it out for free to people, people would come back wanting more for free.

They can't keep it because there is a expire date on all food and should be dispose of so people won't get sick and sue

At least the New Breed of FREEGANS can make the most of all the wasted food, and they do.
They regularly purge the contents of supermarkets waste bins to make full use of their throw-outs. For example I know stores throw away a Pack of good Date eggs for the sake of one broken one. Its scandalous. These people are ECO friendly.
I say Go for It.
