Most likely a blend of sugar and citric acid. It is all natural and nothing to be alarmed by. Citric acid is used in a lot of sour tasting candies. And you are making me want to eat sour patch kids right now too. As far as how they make it they probably spray the liquid onto the sugar.

Citric acid and sugar. Them combine them so the sugar and the citric acid combine.
