Answers: Well this bloke on the radio today said he could. I cant work out how?

yes, if you prepare your food and include rice in every meal. buy one large bag at the where house store, and cook enough for 2 days. then buy some fresh food 2 heads of cabbage fresh meats in wholesale amounts. Chicken is the least expensive, and purchase whole sale veggies fresh or frozen. the key is to PREPARE, HAVE LEFTOVERS EVERY TWO DAYS. HERE IS SOME SAMPLE FOODS THAT ARE MEAL STRECTHERS
One family-sized canister of oatmeal for breakfast
3-pack loaf of wheat bread
one family sized peanut butter
one whole sized bad of apples or oranges for snacks
One wholesale bag of rice
Fresh cabbage or veggies
Beans or lentils
One large pot of spaghetti made with ground beef or turkey
enough for two days
large bag of celery or carrots (wholesale)
The trick is two buy wholesale or on temporary reduction to cut costs. Try to make everything from scratch, because how do you think family's made it in the old days? We live in a world where everything is processed, and now we are used to it. USA did not get the award of being the fattest nation for nothing. We eat a lot of unnecessary things, I'm not saying we all should eat 20 dollars worth of food a week. I'm saying that is is possible if we only take our time a schedule and prioritize.People who have to struggle know about this lifestyle, and no you don't have to eat unhealthy.

I can't even feed a family of 2 on that! Unless they have beans on toast for every meal!

200 packets of pickled onion space raiders.

7 loaves of bread and 7 tins of beans would cost less than £20.

You could even throw in a dozen eggs for a change.

whaaat? no way what did they eat?....dust?

Yeah, if I fed them on soup at every meal. I would love to know how to feed a family of 4 on £20 a week, lol. You certainly couldn't have a healthy diet at that cost could you?

I wish I could, at the moment I spend about £200.00 on my monthly shop, and thats not including all the top ups through the month like milk, bread, etc.

I think it would be possible... although not including coffee, milk and those essentials... I could probably do main meals for a week for 4 on £20... lots of mince, vegetables, pasta and good old staple, home made food... :)

Well we spend a lot more than that,i pay about that just in a week for school packed lunch for my 2 kids!
I suppose its possible if you aren't bothered about what you eat but i cant see it.

If you have soup everyday for the week.
It's possible though,for me my dad,sister,brother and mom it's 80.00-100.00 a week

No - theres only me and my son and i spend way more.

yup, all fresh veg from local market (or grocers), cheap cuts of meat cooked for a reasonable time become tender. no junk or ready prepared food at all

I could if I had to.
Bread, Potatoes, Eggs, all Smart price stuff, packs of noodles about 16p each 9p tins of beans, cheap sausages.
By the way though you wouldnt be able to eat healthily.
You can also buy liver for about 60p a pound.

go to iceland. 20 quid no problem.

if he can hes clearly a genius and i want him to do my shopping

no. you would be very unhappy, and not get enough nutrition,

I can barely do it for one - food is getting so expensive these days. I bet this bloke was lying. If not, then why does he not make a fortune for himself, and save a fortune for countless others by sharing his secret.

I guess you might be able to do it if you were growing and catching your own food, but it would take time and all that time and energy would leave you little time to work or exist any other way!

You can, but it would come down to having your own veg garden, foraging and trapping for wild food, and engaging in a barter system with other like minded people. or instance, I have a licence from the Environment Agency for trapping crayfish and catch more than I can eat for nothing (pots are £3.99 each and last years) apart from a bit of effort from spring thu to autumn. I dont sell them, but probably could, or I could barter with them.

You also need to have significant culinary skills to make the most out of underused ingredients - offal for instance.

Ultimately - yes you can, but you could also survive without TV, Heating (if you have really warm clothes) Microwaves and Cars. just becuase you can do it doesnt mean people immersed in todays lifestyles want to becuase of everything else you have to give up.

Hmmm. Spagetti and Roman Noodles.
Lol.

fresh veg from market or farm shop or loadsa seeds and grow your own ! make own bread/cakes etc could be done i suppose

I live in the United States, and so I am not really familiar with how much of our money, would be the equivalent of what you stated. I do know that we spend way more on food than what we really need to. Foods that are inexpensive, filling, and still very nutritious... would be
Rice
Beans
Potatoes
Eggs
Canned Tuna
Bread
sliced cheese
peanut butter

I think you could live pretty well and quite content if you kept these foods on hand. You would of course need to have some other items to add with it, like fresh fruits and veggies, and milk.. to get the four main food groups. But yes, I'd say it could be done. (even for a family of four, if they were small children. Not if two of the four were growing boys. )

Was this bloke Gordon Brown by any chance, as it sounds like the half ar-_- thing that usualy comes out of his mouth.

i would love to try it as i think with careful cooking it could be done. and quality food too. porridge is cheap and wholesome. home made bread is cheap. veg from local shops or the market is cheap and good value. it would definitely show that we dont need junk food or ready meals.
my mum used to make gigantic stews with a lamb shank and veg with dumplings. very cheap filling and lasted for 2 days. lovely

Of course you could! Have you never been to iceland?

if you had 3 meals a day no snacks yes so easy to do

Now come along ladies ... we all know we could ... for the first week at least ... because, although we all say we've nothing in, if push came to shove we'd find enough in the freezer and the cupboards to get us by! After that though, NO WAY, it's impossible especially, as everyone else has said, to have a healthy diet. H x

Yes dead easy, thousands of OAPs do it. Mind you you do need to know when Asda and Tesco are doing their reductions if you want a really varied diet. Most people don't think of buying today's date reduced in multiples and filling the freezer

erm nettO? own brand supermarkets i.e all asdas own. sticking to basics.
