What is American cheese like ?!
Answers: I saw a cooking show where they were using it and it looked like craft cheese slices (which I personally hate). If so, why is it so different to British cheeses and surely there is more than one variety ?!
Dunno but this question makes me think back to the Top Gear episode where they visited america and Jeremy found in a sandwich.....imitation American cheese......now what on earth is that?????
'American cheese' is a Kraft cheese slice. Stay away!! Don't worry they do all the other, proper cheeses as well!
Well, both Kurt Cobain and The Bare Naked Ladies are fans of the Kraft range. So it can't be all bad, can it?
Ahh.. A question that lies on our tongues quite often. Too often, some might say.
American Cheese is not cheese, at least in the traditional 'Separate curds from whey and then pack the curds' cheese-making process that, y'know, actually makes real cheese. That's not to say that there isn't real cheese in American cheese. There is. But the cheese is also processed with emulsifiers, preservatives (sometimes something as simple as salt, other times with various chemical compounds) and often food coloring. These additives are what make defining American Cheese so difficult.
You see, each type of cheese out there is based off of a well defined enzyme that gives it a particular taste. That's one of the items that makes the difference between a Gruyere and an Edam (another items is the process in which enzymes and bacteria are introduced to the cheese, but that's a different post). Whether you take bite of an high quality Edam or one of mediocre quality, you should still be able to say "This is an Edam Cheese".
American Cheese is not really based off of taste as much as texture.
Kraft slices are pasteurized, processed American cheese. If you want good American cheese try Land O' Lakes. Make sure you have it sliced fresh. They also have a presliced pasteurized processed variety. The fresh sliced is an awesome product
Kraft slices stink.
American cheese is not a brand, ie "Kraft" but a type of cheese. It comes in white or yellow( both are the same except the yellow contains coloring).
It's mild and kids love it ( thats why its so popular).
"Land O' Lakes" makes the best but most other brands are processed "cheese food" ( yuck). It's basically used for grilled cheese sandwiches.( Or for basic sandwiches and recipies that call for a mild melted cheese)
Most British, French and Italian cheeses are "Artisanal" cheeses made in the old tradition and very expensive.
American cheese is very bland and tasteless. I have no idea why people like it.
If it's anything like Jamaican cheese...I wouldn't like it.
Does it come in a tin? I hate cheese from tins.
