I use my hands, as a rule. I do have a friend who actually squeezes the bag until it pops like a balloon (and he's really good at it---never broke a chip, and never lost a chip). The "bang" always scares the hell out of me, though.
I gently squeeze the bag till it pops. You know there is that little bit of air in the bag. Then it's already open and you just have to pull it back a little!

Yeah - I try to carefully open the bag but every now and then I rip it open and lose all the chips all over the floor! What a mess but a heyday for the dog!!
