Why does organic food cost more?!

Question: When it takes less processing? You would think since there is less "stuff" done to Organic foods, that it would be cheaper.

Answers: When it takes less processing? You would think since there is less "stuff" done to Organic foods, that it would be cheaper.

-It takes more labor to produce. (See below)
-The supply and demand is ironic because in some areas the supply is low and the demand is high. In other areas the supply is low and the demand is almost non existant.
-It is not sold as much in the mega stores.
-The shelf life is not as long.
-The places it can come from are more limited. For example if California has some kind of weather issues it would be a lot more dificult to get organic avacados from Chile while it would be pretty easy to do so for the non organic kind.
-Organic foods often times do not have as much visual appeal (but still taste better!) thus reducing consumer appeal.
-On some items consumers do not see/taste the difference and as such are not willing to pay the difference. For example an organic carrot taste way different/better than non organic. On say an onion or garlic not too many people can see/taste the difference and thus are not willing to pay the difference.
-Depending on the part of the country you live in organic food may be seen as eaten only by "hippies" (Stupid to me but still true.)
-Organic foods have to be certified.
-The soil preparation and the ways of dealing with bugs/weeds are most costly.
-Some people just can't afford it and/or do not see any benefit in the higher costs.
-The people who run organic farms are less likely to be part of big agri-business and their business model is not run by making their product as cheaply (to the end consumer) possible.
-Less competition people are less likely to "price shop" for organic food. They are more of the "pay for quality" mind set.

i know!! its weird, maybe cos they are 'eco friendly' and u know how much eco friendly stuff cost

also they are sure its fresh, and you know what is in the food completely, for all u know processed food can have dog **** in it!

There is less of it available and making wholesome organic food requires more labor on the supply side.

Organic food is harder to produce in very large quantities. A regular farm can dust and nourish acres of crops with an airplane. Organic food requires more hands-on effort. The cheapest organic food you can buy is the food your grow yourself...of course, that requires more hands-on effort ;-)

Organic food cost more because there is less demand for it and because it is harder to grow. Yes less processing is done to it and yes well pesticides are used but, weeding has to be done by hand, and natural pesticides (which often cost more). talk to some farmers if you really want to find out more
peace
