Lactose intolerants, can you eat yogurt?!
Answers: I'm lactose intolerant which means I normally become violently ill when I eat ice cream, drink milk, or eat too much cheese. But this never happens when I eat yogurt. Has anyone else experienced this? If so, why is this? Is it the amount of bacteria in the yogurt that prevents me from becoming ill, if that even makes sense? Anyone with similar experiences, or any answers are welcomed! Thanks!
Hello.
You are absolutely right about the bacteria in yogurt having an affect on your ability to digest the lactose.
People who are lactose intolerant lack an enzyme--called lactase--that breaks down the lactose so that the broken down products can be absorbed into your blood system. Without the enzyme lactase, lactose is not absorbed, and the bacteria in your intestines digest the lactose. Subsequently, you have gas and other uncomfortable symptoms.
The bacteria from yogurt releases lactase that breaks down the lactose and allows your body to digest the broken down product.
Hope that helps.
LOL! I can't be bothered answering your question but there is this hilarious Australian sketch on people who are lactose dependant. It is hilarious! Check it out http://youtube.com/watch?v=0VT-xkpzr4U
If that isn't the funniest thing you've seen I'll answer your question.
