Minced Beef?!
Answers: I was going to make a cottage pie tonight but my mince has turned slightly brown. Its used by date is today but is it still safe to eat?
Yes it's fine.
Actual fresh meat should be brown, but manufacturers put dye into it to make it look redder and more appealing to the public. If you have ever eaten deer or moose meat the meat is a brown colour and not the bright red. It's true if you see a metallic green or the meat smell "sour" then "When in doubt throw it out!" Having food poisoning is not a pleasant thing to go through.
i dont think so, but if it was off it would smell terrible.
*ill ask my own. i got some skinned chicken fillets. it was completely sealed, and there was no discolouration. the date was well ahead, but it smelt like rotten eggs. i threw it. any ideas?
yep it's fine, will probably taste better that way!
Yes that is normal meat is naturally brown and meat companies must put dye in to make it red
yep, it means that the meat has been hung for longer before it was minced and that there is no dye in it - will have a much better flavour than the bright red stuff - yummy
If it smells ok then it should be fine.
Dont forget that if it is supermarket bought then the meats are usually injected with dyes to make them look red!! Brown is the colour it should be...........
Just smell it, it should be ok, make sure the fridge is cold enough,
