Popcorn is an unprocessed grain so most of what you pay for is transportation and the selving cost. If you look at dried peas and beans, they are about the same price. When you buy the microwave stuff though, you're paying for the fancy bag and metal device to make it all pop.

When movie theaters buy popcorn, they buy it in 50# bags for about $25/bag. Every cup of unpopped popcorn makes about 2-3 gallons of popped popcorn. Kind of makes you wonder how they charge $7 for a large tub of it. The cardboard tub is by far the most expensive part of the product.

In the USA, the federal goverment subsides the corn growers.
