I need help with my coffee pot problem!?!
Answers: Okay, I have a wondering mind problem and i tend to wig out over some simple things from time to time (hence why i'm on here). I recently moved into a place with my brother, and at my old place (parents) i rarely made the coffee and never had to turn the coffee pot off or on (it was automatic). I'm not totally interested in buying one of those super fancy coffee pots, but i've been having issues remember to turn off my 10 dollar mr. coffee one (that brews strong coffee, just the way i like it) i even went so far to put a note on the door, and still dont see it and forget. I've only lived there a month and today is the third time i've done it and i'm panicking. I have a dog at home and found myself imagining it starting a fire. so, does anyone have any mind tricks to help me remember to turn the darn thing off? guh! Or do i just need to buy a stupid fancy one? Do i have the right to worry about a fire? i'm such a worry-wort!
Yes, you should be very concerned about fire, especially with a poor innocent creature there. Try storing your keys on the coffee maker, or in the bag of food that you get into to feed the doggie before you leave. If nothing else, you must be concerned for your wonderful pet
Try using a French Press, it makes better coffee and there is no bottom burner to concern yourself with. Although you will have to remember to turn off the stove after you have heated your water.
I have a coffee pot that has a metal carafe instead of a glass pot. The coffee stays warm in there for hours - plus, there is NO hot plate underneath. Just a metal platform. I got mine at a discount store for about $25. They can be expensive, but it works GREAT!
If you have a car, put a note on the steering wheel with packing tape. Or, put a little note on your house keys in clear tape big enough to notice.
I have a timing coffee pot I got free from http://www.gevalia.com/Gevalia/ and you just quit before the month before they ship you a shipment of cost coffee. This coffee pot is soo cool girly cuz it shuts off for you! after so long by itself! and you get the free coffee introductory and its the best coffee in thee world! If you don't wanna do that I suggest put a Big Note on your door in Marker so before you walk out you can see it and run back and double check if you did or didn't shut it off. Yes, to your question I do think it can burn and catch on fire.
perhaps, you could get one of those timers you put on your lights when you go on vacation. have it shut off by itself.
I would go buy a coffee maker that you are happy with. There are some nice ones that are not expensive. There are some single servers coffee makers. I love my keurig coffee maker. It is a single server coffee maker. I don't have to worry about leaving it on and that is a load off my mind. I can use it for teas, instant oatmeal packets.or cocoa too. Just remember put the oatmeal in the cup under the coffee maker. They are a l ittle bit more expensive but they are well worth it. You can get a K-cup replacement that you can get at Bed, Bath and Beyond. You can get water filters for it,too. But my hubby and I wasted more coffee than we did drinking it. I know that i have less mess than fouling with coffee filters and all that. Like some mornings i want teas and he wants coffee. These machines are versatile as well as budget worthy. The initial cost for the machine is one thing but i added up the money i spent on filter, coffee and teas that we were not using and that is how i added up the cost of the new coffee maker. Now we are using one and 1/2 teaspon of coffee instead of three tablespoons. Plenty of strong coffee and you can get the refills if you want at Bed, Bath and Beyond. The coffee maker that we have is the breville by keurig.
Try putting a LARGER note on the door.
Tip for getting burnt coffee pots clean : first rinse out all you can with hot water (never put cold water in a hot, especially empty, coffee pot, by the way.)
Then pour some crushed ice(1 cup or so) and salt (1/4 cup or so) into the pot after it has cooled and swirl around. The salt acts like a scouring agent.
You can also buy timers at the hardware store that you can plug things into and they will shut off after the time you set them to, but I don't know how expensive they are, comparatively, to a new coffee maker. I would think they are much less, so this is something you may want to check out.
good luck
Maybe you should get a coffee pot with a thermal carafe. They don't have a hot plate and pose less of a fire hazard. Or can you get in the habit of as soon as your coffee is done brewing you shut the maker off? Or maybe you can put a note on your shoes so when you put them on in the morning you see your note.
