Foods to dehydrate...?!


Question: I just bought a nice new (NESCO) dehydrator, but haven't put it to use quite yet. I most want to be able to dry fruits without having all the added sugar.

any suggestions for fruit types // preparation in order to achieve the best results???

I don't eat anything cooked and use the dehydrator on low setting extensively.

I generally need alot of fruit to make it worthwhile. I do dried apple and go through several kilos, fill up the whole dehydrator, and then my family snack on them and voila! they're gone :) You don't need to add anything to the fruit, just slice it up thinly and pop it onto a mesh sheet for maybe 12-18 hrs. After 12hrs I just check how they're going. Make sure all the moisture is gone so they will keep in the cupboard.

Google for "Raw Foods" and you'll find some fantastic recipes for your dehydrator. You can make museli bars, patties & burgers, fruit rollups (these are great, just puree fruit in a food processor and lay out on a solid dehydrator tray), and crackers - things like this which are pretty easy. They're generally made of nuts, herbs and spices, flax seeds and don't contain oils so it is very healthy.

You don't need to be a Raw Foodie to do these, it could just be a nice change. Anyway, hope this helps you with some ideas!

Oh the pears are good. They taste great!

Apples would be my first choice but Strawberries are in season and they are amazing dried. I normally dry only what is in season and I can get at a good price.

Oranges idk

Pineapple is good, so are bananas and apples. You can practically dehydrate all fruits, but we especially enjoy the ones I mentioned.

When you get used to using your dehydrator, you can also use it to dehydrate fruit yogurt. (Provided you have the trays that can accommodate liquids.) It makes a yummy roll up, like the fruit roll ups.

fruits that are already very sweet are usually gonna hold up well. avoid things that are very moist. if you dehydrate something with alot of water you wont have much left. just keep in mind that if you have never seen a fruit dehydrated before its probably because it turned out bad.

My sister has one and she's always doing different stuff for her kids. It's really cool, they make good healthy snacks! She does Kiwis, banannas, apples, aporcots, berries, everything! She blends some fruits and mixes them together (I think in a food processor) and makes strips of mixed fruit. Tastes really good! Oh and she puts cinnomin on the apples before she does them and that's very good! Good Luck and Have fun!!!!

most fruits are good. bannanas are great. thinly sliced lean beef (no fat) soaked in salt and teriyaki brine is good.

I would try a few of these:
Banana slices
Cucumber
peaches
Apples
Pears

there is absolutely no reason to add sugar, dried apricots, pineapples, mangos, and apples.....okay most dried fruits are my favorite, but there are also pears, beef, grapes, cranberries, mushrooms, cherries, blueberries, peaches, plums, tomatoes, strawberries......it never hurts to experiment either
