Why don't soda companies use square bottles?!

Question: so they can be placed upside down in the refrigerator, prolonging the carbonation of the drink? it would also save them space with packaging and shipping. yet they still use the same design that allows the soda to go flat?

It has to do with the pressure inside the bottle from the carbonation. A round bottle will have equal pressure on all sides of it, and retain its shape, while a square bottle would become deformed and possibly rupture due to the unequal pressure at the corners vs the sides.

There are some brands of bottled water (Fiji, for example) that use the square bottle design, but they can get away with it because it's not carbonated.

you might be on to something, better get a deal and a trademark before someone steals your idea.

it is easier to make it round than square.

i guess, it is easier to hold something round. :)
