the "no eating after ___ pm" is mis-leading. it really depends on when you go to bed. the key is to gradually cut down on the size of your meals as your day progresses. it's because you'll be less active during the nighttime (of course, if you're planning to go out dancing or you work out late, it might make sense to take in a good meal before you head out). but as a general rule, you wanna give yourself a few hours to digest your last meal before going to bed. your body's metabolism decreases while you're in bed, so it won't be the best time for it to digest food. but you also don't wanna go to bed on an empty stomach, otherwise you'll wake up too hungry and might consume too much the next day. What matters are calories in vs. calories out, NOT the time of day.
