Why does chewing gum prevent you from crying while you're cutting or peeling an onion?!

well i dont think it helps...doesnt work for me. but the theory behind it is that when u cut onions, a reaction occurs causing sulphur dioxide to be produced, hence making u cry....
if u chew gum, the gum will absorb the sulphur fumes before it can react with ur eyes, and hey presto, u aint crying after all....

I have never heard that before, but if you put the onions in the freezer for a half hour before you cut them it makes it more pleasant.

Never heard that. I find sticking a spoon in your mouth and having the eating end dangle out works pretty well, personally

no it is not.

It works because you are breathing in and out your mouth which would on the breathing out push the onion gases away from the face. The onion gases are what makes us teary eyed.
