Do you need to scrub fruit before zesting?!
Answers: On TV shows they never do, but wouldn't wax, pesticides, and other stuff be on the peels?
Yes absolutely scrub. Since citrus fruits have really thick peels, they are heavily sprayed with pesticides...moreso than any other fruit or veg.
You should wash and scrub them with hot water. Some people use a mild dish soap to and then scrub well and rinse well.
You could if you want to. I do, just for precaution. =]
You are right I have never seen them do it on a show, but think they might of done it before the show started? you should always do it just to be safe, just scrub hard enough to remove anything that might be lingering on the surface. Because you will be eating it....
I agree with the other answers, i think it's very important and safe to clean fruit before using it for zesting. I don't always know what to use; sometimes, i have used a little bit of salt or baking soda mixed with water and rubbed in onto the skin of the fruit to scrub away some of the dirt or wax on the surface, and then i rinsed it with water again. It's something that i started doing randomly, so i don't know if it's advised to use salt. But in general, it's good the scrub/clean the surface. : )
i'd scrub it just as general principle , how many hands have touched it at the store . there has been an awful lot of probs w/ food here lately . you just can't trust the sanitary conditions of it any more .
Yup. On tv shows, everything has been prepped beforehand. That's how they can cook everything in less than 30 mins.
