Where can I find some morel mushrooms? (which conditions are best for finding them?)?!
Answers: I live in the Ozarks, in Southern Missouri/ Northern Arkansas
the best time is the day or two after it rains. look around trees in well shaded areas. happy hunting.
morels are hard to find good unless you find then yourself in the wild. You will need to go to a specialty market such as jungle jims or trader joes.
go to the closest National Forest and walk around looking for them...........find one here

I'm in Indiana (around the Indy area) and I have gone mushroom hunting every year since I was a wee little gal! :) You can find them just about anywhere, but we typically go to a wooded area. I don't know if you might be a bit too far south for them or not, but it's worth a try.
We have a couple of places we go around Indy and Terre Haute area...can't tell you where, though...hunters secret. But, a good place to start would be a local/state park that has walking trails. Go walking along the trails and see if you find any just off the edge of the path.
It's still too early to go for the yellow morels (most sought after)...wait another few weeks. I think right now the black morels might be up. Mid April to mid May is the best time. But, then again, that's for up here...if morels are down where you are it might be about that time to start looking. And it's best when we get a lot of rain and then a couple of sunny days...then go and hunt.
They are typically found under/around elm trees (fallen or standing) and around mayapples. But, we have found them in a multitude of places. The ground has to be moist for them to come up, so don't go looking if the ground is dry. And they like to be able to get to some light, so if the canopy of trees is thick, you probably won't find any there.
They are tricky to find, but it's fun hunting! I know around this area a lot of local farmers markets will sell morels. So, if you have morels in your area, check at a local market for them, but be prepared to spend a pretty penny for them. Most times they go for $10 - $20 a pound (and sometimes more).
Good luck and happy hunting!!
