Science Fair project with cakes and mold!?!

Question: My 2nd grade daughter made a cake from all natural ingredients, made another using a Betty Crocker packaged cake mix, and bought a Twinkie. All three cakes were on separate plates, covered with plastic wrap and kept in the same location.

She predicted the homemade cake from scratch would grow mold first and the Twinkie would be last to grow mold, yet the Betty Crocker cake grew mold first!

Can anyone please explain to me why the homemade, all natural cake without any preservatives didn't grow mold, yet the package cake mix did?

You've got one smart cookie there. I think I would have made the same quess that your daughter did. Try the science or chemistry section. Perhaps the preservatives are made to keep the mix for a long time in the box and not to perserve the cake once it is made.

Wow, your daughter is very intelligent! She's what I call a smart cookie or even chocolate! LOL!
See, Betty Crocker has unpleasant ingredients contained inside of it.When the mix is made into a cake, it's too moisty which causes the mold! Twinkie has a bit less moisture in it causing it not to grow mold to fast. Natural ingredients contain, I think, no man-made oil that causes the moisture so the cake she made with the natural things in it doesn't grow mold fast either!

In conclusion, moisture equals mold!
P.S. My answer might not be accurate so you should check online about if moisture creates mold!
