Can you make boba tea (bubble tea) with Tapioca pudding? if so, how?!

Question: You cannot use prepared tapioca pudding to make boba tea. However, you can use raw Western-style tapioca pearls in place of the larger, black Chinese ones. You will need to prepare them by boiling, and afterward they must be used immediately to keep a good texture.

Start with seven parts water to one part tapioca pearls-- so, if you are using one cup of tapioca, boil seven cups of water in a big pot. When the water boils, add the tapioca pearls, cover, and cook for 25 minutes. Then, remove from heat and let the tapioca sit in the water for another 25 minutes. Rinse the tapioca in warm water and drain well. It is now ready to be used in tea.

Here is a basic recipe for boba tea. Enjoy!

Classic Bubble Tea Recipe

1/2 cup chilled, cooked large Chinese tapioca pearls (if substituting regular small tapioca, use 1/3 cup)
1 cup crushed ice
1 cup very strong chilled black tea (or orange pekoe tea or Lichee tea)
1 cup milk, or to taste
Honey or sugar to taste

Place the pearls in a large parfait glass. Combine all remaining ingredients in a cocktail shaker, and shake vigorously until the mixture is frothy. Pour into the glass, and serve with extra-thick straws.

Yields one (16-ounce) drink.
