Why cant you eat sugar when you have braces?!

Answers: my friend wants to know

You can indeed eat sugary foods such as chocolate while you have braces. What you are often asked not to do is eat certain specific types of candy or sweets because they can damage or misalign the braces. These include all sorts of hard candy, gummi bears/worms/fish etc, and taffy. You also can't eat nuts, ice, and similar non-sugary foods for the same reason.

Soda is a special case-the problem there is not so much the sugar (although that isn't good) but the acidity, which tends to stain teeth. Since part of your teeth are covered, if you drink a lot of soda, you'll end up with uneven tooth coloration when the braces come off.

It's a lie...I had braces in 4th grade and I ate sugar, gum, caramel, apples, gravel, etc. and I broke all the "rules" of braces wearing, and nothing happened.

I think it's just a liability issue.

It's easy for the grains to get under the anchor bands and cause cavities

ummmm i had braces and i never heard that rule b4.....ur not sposed to eat sticky gummy stuff bec it can brake ur braces (e/o eats stuff like that anyway) mebe u heard that bec its easier to get cavities wiht braces......idk

Chewy foods: bagels, hard rolls, licorice

Crunchy foods: ICE, popcorn, chips

Sticky foods: caramels, gum

Hard foods: nuts, candy

Foods you have to bite into: corn on the cob, apples, carrots

But to tell you the truth just eat as you normally would, just be careful about it.
...

Never heard of this restriction before. The only thing I was told was no peanut butter, apples, or ice.

Sugar, or many foods for that matter, turn to an acid on the tooth. This contributes to cavities. Best rule of thumb is to brush after every meal, snack and at bedtime. It's a lot of work but very worth it in the long run.

That's not entirely true. You do, however, need to rinse thoroughly with mouthwash after eating sweets...or ANY food products. Braces are a bacteria trap and cavities can develop on the tooth enamel which is under the brace structure. Cavities result from food acids which are in long-term contact with the calcium phosphate surface of teeth. I had braces for 5 years and ate sugar every day. The way I avoided cavities is by vigorous rinsing after meals.
