Why do some peanut butter jars have labels state "May contain traces of nuts"?!

Question: In the letigious world in which we now live, manufacturers cover themselves against possible law suits from idiots. If they didn't have the warning on (despite the lable stating PEANUT butter), some idiot with a nut allergy would eat some, nearly die and then sue the company. With the warning on the jar they are safe from this.

because some people are allergic to peanuts

Peanuts are not technically nuts-they are legumes. You will note other labels specifically use "peanuts" when stating product may contain them, not just "nuts".

It may contain almonds etc.
They have to make the people aware that there might not be just peanuts in the jar

But it is kinda funny ^^

Well... Peanuts are actually a nut so why on earth should it say "may contain"? I would stay clear of any peanut butter brand that says "may contain"!! It had better contain nuts otherwise you'd be getting ripped off!

Practically everything says that nowadays. Usually they put that on products that are made on machines that also make food with nuts in them.

anyway, isn't a peanut a nut?

well peanuts are actully legumes .but while making peanut butter jam they also mix dry fruits like almonds and cashews.these need to be ground.if the grinding does not occur properly and "traces of nuts " get in it does not become "pure" peanut butter jam right.so to protect themselves against a lawsuit they do this.

well peanut butter has nuts inside and did you know Nilly every thing says may contain nuts to be safe
