Why did mars confectionery change the name of the marathon bar to snickers?!

Question: Standardisation. It was known as Snickers across the world. Marathon was used to appeal more to the British market, but eventually the marketing team decided to make Snickers the standard name. Just as with Oil of Ulay changing to the international 'Oil of Olay', and of course Opal fruits changing to 'Starburst'.
Marathon officially changed to Snickers on July 19, 1990.
