What is Spotted Dick?!

Question: I live in Virginia, and there are a lot of Brits living here. I don't know how it works in the UK, but in the US if the grocery store doesn't have what you want, they can order it; so now we have an "international aisle" with many foreign foods. The Brits have ordered marmite, clotted cream, colman's mustard, boddington's pub ale, Heinz baked beans, and something that comes in a can called "spotted dick" What is it?

Spotted dick is a traditional English steamed suet pudding containing dried fruit (usually currants), commonly served with either custard or butter and brown sugar. Spotted refers to the dried fruit (which resemble spots) and Dick may be a contraction/corruption of the word pudding (from the last syllable) or possibly a corruption of the word dough.[1] It is possibly conjugated originally from sticky pudding to dicky pudding to dicky to dick and finally spotted dick as in pudding with raisins. It is also known as spotted dog, plum duff, steamed dicky, figgy dowdy, dotted lloyd, packphour's lament, dicky widmark as well as plum bolster, Spotted Richard and, occasionally, Dickie Burton after the famous actor.

It's a steamed pudding, made with flour, baking powder, shredded suet, sugar, currants, lemon zest and milk to mix. Served with custard.

the easy answer is a dessert.the other is something you get from going with loose women.

A few years ago, one of the UK's more useless local councils decided that the name of spotted dick should be changed. This is because the second word has associations with a part of the body. They decided to rename it 'Spotted Richard'. Unfortunately they had forgotten about Cockney rhyming slang, where the rhyming part is often omitted. Then, the name Richard (the Third) has an even worse meaning.
