i dont know, but a good question!!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Its a slang term!. A 'spud' was a type of tool used in potato farming, it was a bit like a spade!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

because the inventor was named Professor SpudWww@FoodAQ@Com

according to my dictionary a spud is a small spade for cutting the roots of weedsWww@FoodAQ@Com

the correct etymology of "spud" is that this word for potato comes from the digging of soil/hole prior to planting the potatoes!. The word is of unknown origin and was originally (c!. 1440) used as a term for a short knife or dagger, probably related to Dutch spyd!. It subsequently transferred over to a variety of digging tools!. Around 1845 it transferred over to the tuber itself!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

If only there existed some sort of knowledge database where people could upload 'pages' and other people could search this pages in a sort of web or 'internet'

Then all you would have to do would be to search on the 'internet' for "spud potato origin word" and maybe these 'pages' would answer the questions for you!.

Maybe such a thing would be invented one day!.!.!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

i thought spuds were sometimes called potatoesWww@FoodAQ@Com

I believe it to be a small garden tool that was used to dig them and other vegetables out of the ground and because its only one syllable in comparison to three, it makes it easier to say!. Good question! More like these people as they get you thinking and researching and we can all learn too!! God im glad i got up this morning now!!Www@FoodAQ@Com

I,ve heard them called Murphies too, probably because of the Irish people,s fondness for them!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
