Why is waitrose so expensive?!?!

Question: Why is waitrose so expensive!?!!?
Just been there and couldn't believe the price of a lot of the products - even basic stuff overpriced!. Think M & S is cheaper!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
They pay higher wages, buy local and support british farming, avoid battery reared animals or eggs!. They don't have the buying power of the hugh coglominate supermarkets that have no ethics!. They also sell a lot of organic and farmed animal products!. But they are good for different products - sauces, wine etc - Just avoid the basics like cereals, jars etcWww@FoodAQ@Com

Keep the chavs out!. Went to one in St!. Albans the other day - not a track suit in sight!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well where I live I get the impression it's to keep the riff raff out, lol!. It's for posh people only!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Because then can be and people do shop there, its a good job we have so many places to choose from !Www@FoodAQ@Com

well dont shop there again then!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

To keep the riff raff out lol, its aimed at middle class people!. Stick with sainsburys, its the best!
I know even Marks and Spensers is cheaper lolWww@FoodAQ@Com

Indeed any Waitrose store is the ultimate in excellence in every possible sphere!. Some folk say it's expensive!. Compared with the likes of ASDA, then I suppose it costs more for the average shopping expedition!. But then there is no real comparison!.

The service you get is next to none!. The staff are incredibly courteous, and the food quality is amazing!. If you buy food from Waitrose, you rarely have leftovers!. That's why it's worth the extra money!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Because it's part of John Lewis and they're not cheap!!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Because mentally challenged posh people choose to pay more for no reason!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Its just how they want to be seen - as a top quality, premium supermarket!. They all aim to attract slightly different people!.

- ASDA, Tescos and Lidel at the low-end, dirt cheap!.
- Morrisons, Aldi, Sainsburies aim to be Fresh, Different and Interesting while still competitive!.
- M&S and Waitrose aim for exclusivity and quality!.

Waitrose have a Royal Warrant which might help justify their prices!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It's part of the John Lewis Group and they supply our dear leaders at Westminster!. They are the only ones who can afford to shop there!. In my experience Waitrose tends to locate in areas where competition is weak, giving them the whip hand on supermarket pricing!. In their defence, their products are of a good quality!. Prefer M&S if I am to be paying over the odds!.

The quality is good and customer services is excellent!.
It isn't a public company and the staff share in the profits
Their internet shopping (Ocado) is good!. Again quality counts!.
You pay your money and you make your choice!
No!. I don't work fo John Lewis Partnership!
W'rose, Ocado = part of the group!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Coz theres stores and soooooooo big, someone has to pay for all that store/stores!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

My boss shops at Waitrose because he says the quality is better!. However, he pays through the nose for branded goods!.

As for Andy - I don't know how he can put Asda and Tesco into the same group as Lidl!. Lidl and Aldi are cheap and don't sell the usual branded goods that you get from the major supermarkets - such as Tesco and Asda!. Lidl and Aldi are owned by two brothers who fell out - which is why both stores are basically identical!. Tesco and Asda have a wider range of goods than Morrisons - who are slightly more expensive than them, but have lovely bread!.

Sainsburys seems to bridge the gap between Tesco/Asda and Waitrose who, as was said, are more expensive than M&S!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

to keep chavs out!. I went there once, and within five minutes four managers had come over and were following me 'checking' prices!. I started to loiter and they got very fidgety!. I wasn't dressed like a middle class housewife, which i have always thought of as a good thing! i guess not good enough for waitrose!.!.!.!.!.!.!.and yes i paid for my food and the barbeque stuff me and my hippy mates were buying!. also when the managers had been stopped by some dithering mumsi person , i went and changed loads of price tags!. Fight the Power! ho-humWww@FoodAQ@Com

Waitrose is aimed at the middle class shopper, a person with a better than average income!. The average income here in UK is now £26,000 pa!. To shop at Waitrose a person needs a minimum income at least £40-£50K +

Personally I have found the food at my local street market is a fraction of the price of any supermarket - so that's where I do a lot of my shopping!.

For example!. Yesterday I purchased a 'scoop' of seedless grapes at my street market for £1!. A scoop is about 1!.5 to 2 bunches of grapes!. My local Sainsbury's have the exact same grapes for £2 a bunch!. So no deal then!

Where Sainsbury's and Tesco score is with their own-branded goods!. For example, Sainsbury's baked beans at about 16 to 19pence a can is unbeatable!.

How do Sainsbury's manage to sell backed beans so cheaply and still make a profit!?

Some years ago Sainbsury's scientists developed a Navy Bean (harricot bean) which grows well in the English climate!. Sainsbury's now have a number of farmers growing these beans on their behalf!. Sainsbury's also have their own canning factory etc!.

So, if you want to save money on your shopping, find out the cheapest for each item you buy and go there!. Don't just get everything at the nearest supermarket - they are not always the cheapest and most certainly will not be if like me you have an army of crafty Cockney's with market stalls!.

London's famous Cockney costamongers (barrow boys) are the first to spot and grab a bargain and pass that benefit on to their customers!.

Here's a typical London street market - East Street off the Old Kent Road near the Elephant : -
