Eggs need to be fertilised to be viable!. No cock(erel) no chicks!. Interestingly cocks don't have cocks they have cloacas but thats another story!.
If fertilised eggs have to be kept at a constant temperature to develop which is why chickens and other birds nest!. Most battery hens have no opportunity to nest as eggs are taken away immediately!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Chickens lay eggs regularly; they are sterile unless they have been fertilised by the malebird, before they are laid!. The shell, by the way is the very last thing to be added to the outside of the egg just before laying!.
So if there is no male running with the hens, they will continue to lay eggs which will never turn into chicks!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
