Question: Barring cutting it open, how can you tell whether a watermelon is firm and "crisp" or slimy inside!?
i dont mind getting a bad apple or plum in a kilo, but to buy a watermelon for £3 and find its inedible, is no joke!Www@FoodAQ@Com

CT scans work well!. as do MRI's, but both are costly!.
So for those folks in England that don't know how I'll tell ya!.

It's all in the thumping!.!.!.!. yep the thumping!. Pat that mellon like a baby's bottom!. it should sound with a good "thump" and ressonate in your hand!. It should feel heavy for it's size compared with others!.

Now the sweet part is harder to find out!. It takes years of practice and a good nose to find that special sweet smell that is a perfect mellon!.

Then there are 2 thoughts on eating that perfect mellon!.
Right out of the field, all wet and warm!. Or my favorite, chilled to the bone and cut into seedless cubes, the heart is always eaten first!.

First the color has to be just right!. Not all green!. You want the bottom to be yellowy green!. Then you have to tap it!. If it sounds hollow you are at a great start!. The next is it should feel lighter then it looks and bam you have a great watermelon!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Tap the watermelon with your knuckle!. It should sound hollow!.
Good watermelon!. If it sounds full then it is mushy inside!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I was told to squeeze the top and bottom together with my thumbs !.!.!. if it's slightly flexible then it's a good one!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
