They are afraid that people will throw the chewed gum everywhere and thus i think not allowing is a right decisionWww@FoodAQ@Com

Singapore was having a problem with improperly disposed chewing gum in the 80's and early 90's!. Gum would be left on the ground and in mailboxes and whatnot, and they decided that they'd rather just ban it altogether!.

Some gums are used for medicinal purposes (some to help with dental/oral issues, and then there's nicotine gum!.!.!.), so those have a legitimate reason to be there!. Regular chewing gum, though, really doesn't provide much, so I could see why they'd ban it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

First off you need to be clear that with the exception of various places like the transit trains and buses (public transport in general) - there is no ban on the consumption of chewing gum in Singapore!.

The government here though use a more innovative approach to reduce the amount of chewing gum in Singapore - they made it illegal to sell chewing gum!.

Only recently, some chewing gum has been allowed for sale on medical purposes and these by prescription only!.

So technically, it is allowed to chew gum in Singapore, the difficulty is finding a place that sells them!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

A Singaporian friend of mine says that it's because of the littering problem that happens with chewing gum, when people spit it out on to the streets and then it gets stuck all over the place!.Singapore has very strict laws on littering and fines are imposed!.Anything that contributes to litter and mess and is not essential shouldn't be allowed!.
If you see the cleanliness on the streets there you would agree on this too!Prescribed ones are probably to assist with quitting smoking etc so are essential and probably termed as medicinal!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Singapore do not want to enrich its neighbour Malaysia who is the largest producer of rubber!.!.!.the base for chewing gum!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

iys cos they want singapore to be cleanWww@FoodAQ@Com
