Did potato chip companies ever fill their bags ?!

Question: Did potato chip companies ever fill their bags !?
Did they start by filling the bags to the top, and then slowly work down to filling it about halfway, which is where it is now, or did they always fill the bag halfway!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
Part of the point of all that air in the bag is to keep the chips from getting smashed into teeny bits! (the extra air acts as a cushion) Yes, the bags did used to be fuller, and then people started complaining about broken chips, so the bags got a bit bigger and the amount of chips got a bit smaller!.!.!.all for the sake of whole chips!.

The bags are partially filled and puffed up with air so the bag acts like a cushion for it's contents!.

Give it a try at home with zip-loc bags!.
Fill one full of chips and mash and toss the bag!.
Fill one 1/2 with chips, puff up the bag and try mashing tossing the bag!.

The puffed bag should have less chip breakage!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

what they do is they give you the same amount of chips as they would a long time ago in a small bag, which was filled!. But the bags today use the same amount of chips just in a bigger bag so you think that you're getting more, but really you're notWww@FoodAQ@Com

They need some space so they can seal the bag without breaking the chips and then the chips settle during transit, hence we get half-full bags!.

when they are first introduced they are 90pct filled then they go down to 75 pct then eventually 50pctWww@FoodAQ@Com

They leave space for air because there is less breakage that way, at least in transit!.
