Do you eat food after the expiration date? Or do you toss it out on the exact date?!

Question: Do you eat food after the expiration date!? Or do you toss it out on the exact date!?
My Mom uses mayonnaise that is 3 years past expiration!. She eats it all the time without getting sick!. It is so thick you can't squeeze it out of the bottle!. She also ate chicken left out overnight and never got sick!
I am a tosser myself!. Not one day after expiration for me!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
I'm bad with it!. I dont eat anything past expiration!. when I open foods, I put the open date on the outside of the container and then I'll know not to use it past that date!. The thought of old food makes me gag!. No potato salad at your mom's house, te heee (couldnt resist) But for real her stomach must be made out of steel!Www@FoodAQ@Com

It depends!. I don't check expiration dates but if it tastes bad, then I will check and usually toss it!. If I leave food out and it is not something likely to go bad and it is the winter so my apartment is 55-60 degrees, I'll eat it but not serve it to others!. In the summer, when it is 80 in my apartment, I toss food left out!. I left bologna out for 48 hours the other day but the apartment hadn't gotten above 60 degrees during that time so I ate it and was fine!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Just remember, the "sniff test" theory usually works well, except for milk in the carton/jug!. Once you open and pour milk, some milk gets around the lip of the spout!. If its had a day or so to dry after you've sealed the milk back up, then when you go to sniff into the carton you WILL smell sour milk!. This, however, does not mean the milk is bad!. I'd suggest pouring a little into a [clean] glass and smelling it then!.

But as the other people stated, the expiration date is usually just the date recommended as the longest the item should stay on the shelf at the grocery store!.

The mayonnaise thing!.!.!. It is pretty gross personally, but if your mother has no side effects from eating it, then tell her to go for it! Ha! ;)Www@FoodAQ@Com

It depends on what it is and how old it is!. The mayo thing just turned my stomach, lol!. Generally, cheese and eggs, I'll let those go about a week and as long as they still smell and look ok, I'm good!. Milk I start giving a sniff test the day it expires!. Condiments, I'd let it go about a month but again, using a sniff test!. And anything that should be refrigerated that stays out overnight is tossed the next morning!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

3 years is definilty way to far, but it's not really an epiration date but rather a "sell by date" this means it must be off the stores shelves by the date on the package!. It should be good for a while afterwards, the amount of time afterwards depends on the item!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

no i alwqays look at experation date and wait 1-2 more days!.but it depends on what it is!.milk you can keep for an extra like 3-5 days depending on storage temature!.unless you freeze it you can keep it for 1-2 months!.but thats on milk!.:)Www@FoodAQ@Com

No, I do not eat food after the expiration date!. I toss out stuff even when it is approaching the expiration date!. Most of those items end up on the compost pile out back, so it's not an entire loss!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Wow!. I give food a few days past the date, which is really a guideline!. Not years! To keep the hubby happy I toss it out on the date or he won't eat it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Expiration dates are for the stores! Most food can be eaten well past the expiration date if under proper storage!. When I was in the army, eggs were kept in cold storage and were perfect even after 6 months old!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Three years is a bit much!. However, the dates are usually "sell by" dates, which means the food is fine beyond that date!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I usually will do a sniff test to see if whatever it is has a bad smell or not so I go past the date most the time!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

THROW THROW THROW!.!.!. away!

I am not about to get sick to save a buck! If you've ever had food poisoning you would agree!.!.!. ( I know that you do Sunny Sky)Www@FoodAQ@Com

I toss everything out that is expired!. I dont like to get food poisonWww@FoodAQ@Com

I eat only certain things after the expiry date!. But meat/fish!!!! Forget it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Personally, I do the smell test!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

ya im pretty much like you!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
