This doesn't answer your question directly, but it's an idea you might find useful!. I did it myself when I was younger!.
Swap skills with someone!. Find a friend who cooks well, and get them to teach you some stuff!. Teach them something you know in exchange!. Or, if you don't have anything to teach them, DO stuff for them in exchange, like, vacuuming or washing their car or something!. Things they don't like to do that you don't mind!.
Otherwise, look for books like "Dude Food," where they assume the cook is a guy, which allegedly means clueless of course!. Or, "Rachel Ray's 30-Minute Meals," where only a total fool can screw it up!. You won't learn "to cook" like Martha S!., but you won't be eating total crap either!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I'm 20 and I had to learn in the last couple of years how to shop and cook for myself!. I'll give you a list of basic foods that I always have and also some shopping and cooking tips!. Here is my "shopping list":
Brown rice (it's healthier than white rice and tastes the same)
Stone-ground whole wheat bread
Peanut butter and jelly
Blue corn tortilla chips and fresh salsa
String cheese
Corn or flour tortillas (you can heat up a can of beans and add it to the tortillas with some cheese and veggies for a great burrito, or even just wrap a piece of string cheese in it and nuke for a few secs)
An onion
A couple of russet potatoes (you can make baked potatoes in the oven or microwave, you can cut them up and boil the pieces to make mashed potatoes, etc!.)
Whole-wheat pasta (easy to make-follow directions on box)
Prego Pasta sauce (just heat it up and eat)
Packets of sauce mix (such as pesto and alfredo)
Canned soups
Turkey and cheese from the deli counter
Assorted fresh fruit (get what you like)
Olive oil (NOT extra-virgin) (put a little in a pan under medium heat and add veggies like zucchini, onions and/or mushrooms -- this is very good to add to pasta sauce)
Ground beef is easy to cook if you eat meat
Activia yogurt (VERY good for your digestive system)
Orange juice (buy it in a half-gallon size so it doesn't go bad before you can drink it)
Half gallon milk
half dozen eggs (it is very easy to boil eggs or make scrambled eggs)
Two or three mushrooms (buy them individually to save money)
Cans of black beans (one delicious thing to eat is black beans mixed with rice)
Cans of tuna (mix with miracle whip to make tuna sandwiches)
Peanuts, dried cranberries, chocolate chips, etc (to make your own tasty trail mix)
Bisquick (make your own panckes--its easy and directions are on the box)
Vegetable oil
Butter/margarine
Celery (put peanut butter on it-yum!)
Frozen strawberries (put them in a blender with orange juice and other fruits for a tasty smoothie)
Frozen pizza (add your own veggies before cooking)
Basic spices: sage, oregano, cumin, garlic salt, etc!.
Saltine crackers
Hummus (it is SO good--try it!)
Popice : popsicles that have very few calories!.
Tofu (cook in olive oil the same way as a the veggies)
Spinach (I use it in salads and on sandwiches instead of lettuce because it has a higher nutritional content!.
Veggie burgers (easy to make-directions on box)
Avocados (good sliced up on sandwiches, or mashed up with lemon juice and pepper to make your own guacamole!)
Pudding cups
Applesauce
Cheddar Cheese
also in the frozen food section, there is usually a "stir-fry mix" with veggies and sauce and stuff that is easy to make and delicious and healthy!. Directions on bag!.
also most Hy-Vees have a pre-made pouch of different kinds of curry in their health aisle that you just microwave and put on rice--delicious!
Here are a few tips that I've learned:
1!. Try to make little changes to make yourself eat healthier!. For example, I recently convinced my boyfriend to start eating baby carrots instead of potato chips when he is playing video games!. I switched from white bread to stone-ground whole wheat bread!. I switched from "regular" pasta to whole wheat pasta (and it tastes exactly the same under sauce)!. I also switched from potato chips to blue corn tortilla chips with fresh salsa!.
2!. Deli meats are cheaper!. If you buy meat and cheese for sandwiches, you are better off buying them at the deli counter than in the pre-packed aisles!. also keep in mind that you are shopping for just one person!. I have found that 1/4 to 1/2 a pound lasts me awhile and won't expire before I have a chance to eat it!.
3!. Pack a lunch to take with you to school or lunch so that you're not tempted to spend money eating out!. I've found that a sandwich, and a microwaveable bowl of soup is delicious and easy!.
4!. Cook in bulk!. At the beginning of the week, I make a big pot of rice and then eat it all week with vegetables, or under curry, or with cinnamon and sugar, etc!. I sometimes make pasta a and mix it up with pasta sauce and eat that a couple of times a week!. I also sometimes boil a few eggs to refrigerate and eat over the course of the week!.
5!. Eat with a friend!. it's easier to cook for two people and it's more fun to eat with a friend!.
7!. it's easy to cut up a few veggies and cook them up in a pan with a little bit of olive oil!. You can add it to a pre-made pasta sauce or to rice and it is delicious!.
6!. Don't buy too many fruits and veggies at a time!. Fruits and veggies are good for you, but you are only one person so don't buy more than you can eat before it goes bad!. This takes practice and depends on your preferences, but I usually buy one potato, one onion, one avocado, one small zucchini, two apples, an orange, two bananas, two or three mushrooms, and some spinach!.
Some of these foods and/or tips may not work for you because everyone is different but good luck!!!Www@FoodAQ@Com
