Why have supermarkets got so expensive these past few weeks?!

Question: Why have supermarkets got so expensive these past few weeks!?
I've REALLY noticed the massive rises in the price of even basic foods, such as Milk, Cooking Oil, Bread, Sausage, Eggs etc etc etc!. Are they just getting greedy!? Should I just stop buying as much or shop elsewhere!?

Cheers!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
High fuel prices!.

Thanks to ‘oil, fuel’ price increases…!.everything has increased in price!.

Truckers/trucking companies have to increase their prices to their retail customers……has a domino effect…!.terefore we are paying more!.

It’s costing truck owners $1000 plus to fill their tanks…!.plus they have payments and up keep and insurance to pay for those ‘big rigs’…!.!.and that’s not cheap!

Look around…!.!.what do you own that wasn’t trucked in to your local grocery…!.retailer (Wal-Mart…!.K-Mart…!.Meijer…!.Family Dollar…!.Walgreens…!.etc!.etc…!.) or gas station!.

Therefore the truckers has to add a surcharge to these retailers!.

Heard on the radio this morning (April 30, 2008)…!.!.B P & Shell had record profits/sales yesterday!. I noticed (yesterda0) some of the cheaper stations (Speedway & Joe’s Junction (which sells Phillips 66 gas)…the price for regular was $3!.75 a gallon…!.and diesel fuel was $4!.19 (which is what truckers use…!.for those of you who didin’t know this)!. Haven’t been out yet today…so don’t know if it’s changed any…!.!.if so probably up…not down!.

Is it any wonder!?!?!?!? Look who is president!! An ‘OIL MAN’!! With ‘oil buddies’…!.!.he has to keep them happy…!.and where are these oil men from…!.!.!?!?!?

Do you really think he/they are going to do anything about prices…!.for the average ‘Joe’!?!?!?!?

He’s got a few more months left in office…!.!.so you better hold on to your axxxes……”ain’t going to get any better!!” LOOK OUT …!.!.here he comes!!

Everything going up but wages…!.!.sure supposed to increase minimum wage…!.!.will help a little……but cost of living is outrageous……the average family (of 4) needs mom & dad both working to keep their head above water (if possible)…!.!.and minimum doesn’t cut it!.

By the time you pay for essentials…!.medical…!.food…baby sitters…!.gas…!.utility bills…!.(not necessarily in that order) whats left…or what do you put off paying this month/week…!.so you can buy food …!.or gas to get back & forth to work!.

Do you think the ‘oil men’ are worried about you and me and our children’s welfare!? Heaven forbid one of their family ‘wanted for anything’!!! Or needed medical attention!!

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr………………don’t get me started…!.!!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well what you are seeing is the result of the last several months of increased expenses and the current low output from farms!. So the increased costs are now being passed on to consumers (higher shipping costs plus higher energy costs at retail and handling centres)!.

Further you are now getting into new crops coming in and there have been dramatic price increases for many food items as the higher expenses are affecting the entire food chain from planting, to harvesting to shipping to packaging etc!.

Now combine that with an on going food shortage and a world demand for food and you get a food price increase as shortages drive up prices and not only on the items in shortage but others as well as there is more demand for other food items to compensate for lack of others!. Sort of a vicious circle until food production can be stabilized and distribution costs be balanced out!. But this is not going to happen soon so expect more increases over the next year!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Get use to it and stock up on dry goods!. The high price of oil and corn have a cascading effect on food prices!. Milk, butter and ice cream should go way up since they depend on a lot of energy to make!.

All animal products that are fed corn will go up(including eggs) and the price of wheat has more than doubled in the last six months!. We use to buy 50 pound bags of flour for $10 and they are now $25!.

But worse still is the price of hops has increased five times in the last year!. Eggs are one thing, but if they raise the price of beer to over a buck a can, there will be riots in the streets!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Viper has it right!. It is because of the rising fuel costs!. We get food these days from all over the world so things come here by truck, train, plane and boat all of which require fuel to get here!. Not to mention the farm equipment which also requires fuel!. I have been working in the grocery business for 23 years and in the past 5 years or so I have noticed fuel surcharges added to the invoices!. Never had I seen this before!. It's easy to blame the grocery store for higher prices, believe me I hear it all the time! But it's really much more than just jacking up the prices for the heck of it!. Everything is going up except for our paychecks!. I have not had a raise in over 2 years!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Two reasons: Cost of fuel and cost of commodities such as wheat and sugar!. This means that it is more expensive to feed animals, plus any grain produced locally is sold at the market rate!. It is also more expensive to transport foodstuffs, as well as the cost of fuel used to manage farms and provide heating and lighting for animals and heated greenhouses!.

This is a world wide phenomenon!Www@FoodAQ@Com

there are many factors but a major one is gas prices!. most items require equipment to be processed!. so you have tractors, etc!. that require gas to run and because that has gone up in price, it makes it more expensive to produce your overall good!. then there is deliver!. most things get delivered by trucks!. again, gas cost more so they in turn pass the difference onto you!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Shop at Aldi's or grocery surplus stores if you have them in your area!. Take advantage of farmer's markets!. Buy ahead and freeze the stuff!. Cut trips to full price chain grocery stores down to bare essentials and make a list before you go shopping!. also, never shop for food when you're hungry!. You'll always spend more than you need!. Look for sales!. Clip coupons!.
Aldi's has few choices but good prices - better than "name" grocery stores!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I accept that prices have risen because of higher oil costs, but I think manufacturers are being very greedy and putting far too much on their goods!.Just one example,a packet of 12 Jaffa cakes,up from 67 pence to 1 pound !.A very small example but think of all the millions of packets sold!.This is besides all the other products having a hefty hike!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

gas prices are affecting transportation costs which get absorbed into the price of the the products!. Plus more farm production is going into alternative fuel solutions so less is going onto the grocery shelves!.

There is no reason to shop elsewhere because prices are up everywhere!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Oil my friend, is the culprit!. The food must be delivered to the stores by trucks using high priced gasoline, harvested by machines doing the same, and much of the packaging is plastics which are an oil derivitive!. As gas prices go, so goes all else eventually!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

its mainly crop production!. crops have not been so good in the past year that is is affecting things now!. and because farms pay more for crops, they then pass prices on thru what they are making like dairy products and veg!. also the fuel prices wont be helping but i doubt that has affected food prices too much!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

actually its because of gas prices it more expensive for trucks to bring the food and shipping companies not everything is grown locally so it has to be shipped in from other places and it gets there mainly by truck which uses diesel fuel which is outrageous right now!.,Www@FoodAQ@Com

Rising fuel oil and gasoline prices have increased the costs or producing many foods as well as the costs of transporting them to distribution warehouses and, finally, to markets!. It's happening everywhere!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

mainly due to the storms that we had in the past 8 months, theve put a dent in crop production, and as fuel rises,it has a chain reaction!.
it sucks doesnt it!!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Part of it is the stupid idea to use a major food staple, corn as fuel!. But this will go on for years even though everyone knows it's a debacle!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

yeah i've noticed that, my shopping just seems to be getting dearer each week and I'm getting the same type of stuff, i think they are just getting greedy to be honestWww@FoodAQ@Com

It's the gas prices & the cost to make the food!.
Start buying generic brands and clip coupons!.

I might have to stop shopping at grocers all together!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

supermarkets are more expensive because the weat industry and dairy are stopping a lot of the importing ships!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Everything is going up, it's not just food prices!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It is related to the rising cost of diesel gas!. It costs a lot more to transport goods now!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
