What does it mean when the food is "fortified"?!

Question: What does it mean when the food is "fortified"!?
Answers:
Fortified means that vitamins or minerals have been added to the food in addition to the levels that were originally found before the food was refined!. When foods are fortified, they will have more vitamins and minerals after they are refined than they did before they are refined!. Common fortified foods are: milk (fortified with vitamin D) and salt (fortified with iodine)!.

"Fortified" is often misused by companies who produce cereal and fruit drinks!. Cereal boxes will often say 'fortified with essential vitamins and minerals'!. The cereal usually contains high amounts of sugar!. Adding vitamins and minerals to the cereal gives it more nutritional value, but it doesn't change the high amount of sugar that is present!.

Mandatory fortification of food is where food manufacturers are required to add a vitamin or mineral!. These are added in response to a significant public health need, for example, thiamin and folic acid to wheat flour for bread-making!.

Voluntary fortification allows food manufacturers to choose what vitamins and minerals they want to add to food, providing they are permitted in the Food Standards Code (the Code)!. For example, many breakfast cereals are fortified with a range of vitamins and mineralsWww@FoodAQ@Com

It's another way of food manufacturers adding value to a foodstuff to enable them to charge a higher price!. Generally, although you wouldnt believe it at the moment, the retailers have screwed down prices from food suppliers, so retailers in conjunction with suppliers look for a way of creating a unique marketing point of difference and adding further value!. Food products are fortified with frankenstein artifical vitamins where the natural ones have been destroyed or weren't there to rip you off and make you think your buying something wonderfully healthy!. You're better off with natural healthy fresh foods rather than being dosed with these fortified chemicals!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

When a food is processed, most of it's nutritional value is REMOVED!.
To have a fortified food means that it has been over processed and then vitamins and minerals have been put back in ARTIFICIALLY!.

Whole foods are a much better option!. Keep it a real as you can :)
