More food to throw out .... !?!
Fancying a late night jam sarnie, I have just opened a jar of strawberry jam and another with marmalade in it!. Both had a layer of white spores on them !.!.!.!. needless to say, straight in the bin but what a waste!. I always thought that the sugar gave them a long shelf life but apparently not!. Can people advise how long these kind of things should be kept and how their shelf life may be prolongued!? also, what can you do to keep bananas alive and kicking all week !? Should they be wrapped, kept separate from other stuff or chilled!? All suggestions welcome !.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
Answers:
once the jars are opened, they should be kept chilled in the fridge, and they're to be consumed within 2 - 3 weeks, not more than a month!. make sure that whatever you used to swap the jam / marmalade with is dry & clean!. things that comes out from the fridge got to go back into the fridge to keep well!.
bananas are best stored hanging in a cool place to prevent them from bruising & ripening!. you can keep them in the vege compartment of the chiller to prolong it, but if it's too cold, it'll get 'fridge-burn' - become ripe very quickly, yes, you can wrap them in paper to store together with other vege in the chiller!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Once bananas become ripe - that is, yellow in color, speckled with a bit of brown - put them in your refrigerator, preferably at a temperature of about 50F (10C)!.
Mash and freeze ripe bananas, in one-cup portions, or freeze whole, peeled bananas in plastic bags, for use in later baking!.
What do I do if there's mold on my jellied fruit product!?
Discard jams and jellies with mold on them!. The mold could be producing a mycotoxin (poisonous substance that can make you sick)!. USDA and microbiologists recommend against scooping out the mold and using the remaining jam or jelly!.
hope this helps!. good luck and enjoy!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

You're quite safe to scrape the mould off the top of the jam - must have been over 2 years old I would guess and already opened if it went mouldy though!
Bananas, don't put them in the fridge, keep apart from other fruit as they produce a LOT of the chemical that MAKES other fruits ripen faster - a cool place not in the dark would be best!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Do NOT chill bananas, or put them into any sort of bag!. Just keep them on the counter!. You can always freeze them, when they start to turn color, and use them frozen in smoothies, or for banana bread !.!.!.!.!.!.Jams should have an expiration date on them, although they should have been packed in sterilized jars!. If they aren't old, I'd return them to the store you bought them at!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
