Are dented cans really bad?!

Question: Are dented cans really bad!?
We got a whole bunch of free food from my husbands work, most of them are cans that are dented!.!.!.I remember learning in highschool that you shouldn't eat anything from a dented can because it could cause botulism!.!.!.is this a real concern or should we go ahead and eat them!? Is the food from dented cans really bad for you!?!?!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
"Avoid canned foods that are swollen or bulging, leaking, rusted or are dented at the seam or rim!. Do not use cans with sharp dents!. Products in cans that are only slightly dented can be consumed as long as there are no leaks and the product appears wholesome!.

Severe denting or denting at the seam or rim may allow air into the can, potentially exposing the contents to bacteria and other pathogens, thus posing a food safety hazard!."

Almost all cans now use a kind of paint like plastic coating on the inside!. It is much tougher and safer than the old tin lined cans were!.
If what was in the can was salty or acidic a dented tin lined can would corrode like a battery from the inside and get pinhole leaks!. You would get rotting food but be unable to tell!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

So long as the can isn't leaking, it's okay!.

Botulism is really deadly, nothing to play with!. But botulism makes the can bulge outwards, not inwards!. It doesn't cause the can to look dented, and it isn't caused by the can being dented!.

The only thing wrong with dented cans is that supermarkets don't like them on their shelves!. There used to be a chain of stores around here called the Dented Can Warehouse where they sold dented cans and other food the major supermarkets didn't want!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

The only way to find out is to open the can!. If it has botulism you will know immediately as it will have black in it!. The botulism occurs if air gets into the can if the can has even the slightest hole from the dent and acid builds!. It is improbable and not likely!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

dented cans are still good!. just make sure you can get a discount when you get to the register!. if the can is dented and inflated then don't buy it or use it!. the food wouldn't be any good, throw it away!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It's highly risky;-{ & botulism is no joke!
What happens is the dent crcks the inner coating!.
Then acids in the food attack the metal can!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

No,
the only time a dented can is no good is if it's blown up on either or both sides!.
If its not, it perfectly good!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

If in doubt boil what ever is in the can for 5 min this will kill all BactriaWww@FoodAQ@Com
